Codybear Collies – Our History

We started with one rough coated collie , a pet named April. She is a gorgeous tri factored sable and everyone who meets her can't help but love her. She has a wonderful personality and a look that you can't resist. A couple years after that we got Sneaker, a blue merle female. She was a show dog and part of our purchase agreement was, that Sneaker must be shown to obtain her CKC Conformation championship .We started going to dog shows and soon got hooked. We moved to the Owen Sound area and out into the country. Gradually we got a few more rough collies and attended more shows and the points and championships just started piling up. We had 6 champions in 2004. We had 4 champions in 2005.

We started doing a lot of research on different rough collie breeders in Canada and the USA as well as a couple world wide. We decided to strike out on our own and try to obtain rough collies which could help us to eradicate Collie Eye Anomaly from our kennel, as our first few collies were all affected. That took us to several breeders in the USA from whom we purchased normal eyed collies and normal eyed non carrier puppies. These dogs have it all .... good bone structure , luxurious coats. excellent bloodlines and normal eyes. We are constantly learning and trying to educate ourselves and improve upon our collies.

Being an Ontario Rough Collie Breeder gives us an edge to producing beautiful thick coats because of all the cold weather and snow that we have here. These new dogs have all the qualities we want. Combined with our first rough coated collies, we feel that we can breed and achieve excellent results and produce sound healthy puppies. Some collie breeders have both rough coated collies and smooth coated collies. We breed only the rough collies here .

At Codybear Collies, we try to answer all emails and any questions people have as soon as possible. I can't begin to count the number of times, that we have been told, that we are the only breeder that took the time to answer a question or respond to an email . Everyone's letter or email or phone call is important to us... not just the people wanting show puppies. We try to answer your questions and if we don't know , then we will find out for you . A well informed pet owner is a very conscientious owner. We care more about our dogs and pups finding a good stable family than whether or not they end up in the show ring. In reality , you are very lucky if one or two pups out of a litter are show quality.

We ask as part of our sales contract, that you send pictures regularly and keep in touch with us. That in itself is unique amongst other collie breeders and speaks volumes as to how much we care about our dogs and what their new family life is like. We have been so fortunate thus far to have gotten wonderful families for our dogs.

All of our collies are vet inspected and vaccinated by a veterinarian . We have an opthamologist check the dogs' eyes at 6-7 weeks of age and they are certified. The dogs are all CKC registered at no extra cost. Just a side note here.........Don't ever let anyone charge you extra for the registration papers! They belong to the dog , not the breeder. If you are offered a dog at a lower price if you don't want the papers... Run from that breeder. They are doing something illegal. Any dog that is advertised as "Purebred" must have registration papers and they are to be provided to you at no extra cost. You have to be given the papers with the dog. You wouldn't buy a car and not expect an ownership registration . Accept nothing less with your new pet!

There are a lot of good responsible dog breeders out there and there are a lot of irresponsible , money hungry breeders out there. Take the time to investigate and ask a lot of questions. Your breeder should in turn ask a lot about you and your family life, if they care about where their animals are going . A good breeder should have the time and patience to answer your letters, emails and phone calls. Take your time to find a good one . Thanks very much for your interest in us and what we do .
